"Stockpile: The Nuclear Menace" (Discovery Channel, 9-11 p.m. E/P) In this documentary about the problem of maintaining the effectiveness and reliability of nuclear weapons you'll see none other than Martin Sheen (President Bartlett in "The West Wing") guiding viewers through U.S. and Russian weapons storage sites where former Cold War foes are collaborating to keep these devices from becoming unstable or subject to theft by terrorists.

"Islam: The Awakening" (PBS, 10-11 p.m. E/P) This very interesting episode of the currently running PBS documentary about the rise of Islamic Civilization describes intellectual achievements originating in the Middle East a milennium ago -- where scientists and mathematicians were way, way ahead of the West and provided the basis for the European Renaissance.

Saturday, October 13

"Ice Cream" (History Channel, 7-7:30 p.m. E/P) This is a technology documentary showing of how they make ice cream in factories. Part of a series called "Hands On History", it's followed by a similar documentary called "Beer" (History Channel, 7:30 -8 p.m. E/P).

"Apollo 13" (ABC, 8-11 p.m. E/P) This is an Oscar-winning movie depiction of the historical events in 1970 when the famous understatement "Houston, we have a problem." was used to report the situation of 3 NASA astronauts caught between the earth and the moon in a runaway space vehicle.. The crew, aided by cool-headed technicians on earth, performed miracles of ingenuity using unlikely on-board materials to get themselves safely back to earth. (Tom Hanks is in this movie.)

Sunday, October 14

"CBS News Sunday Morning" (CBS, 9-10:30 a.m. E/P) The featured stories on this regular weekend TV newsmagazine (really quite the equivalent of reading a big-city Sunday newspaper's magazine section) are about the state of women in Afghanistan and an exhibit at Washington's National Gallery about the depiction of women in Renaissance art. Also, a report on how people in a big city -- Chicago -- are coping with the altered state of thinking since September 11th.

"Harley Davidson: The Birth Of The V-Rod" (Discovery Channel, 9-10 p.m. E/P) This documentary traces the design and manufacture of the newest -- reputedly the most revolutionary -- Harley-Davidson motorcycle. For people interested in tradition, it's fun to learn that it's the work of Willlie G. Dadison, the grandson of one of the company's founders.

Monday, October 15

"Madame Curie" (Turner Classic Movies, 1-3:30 p.m. E 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) Here's a movie worth catching on tape for evening viewing. It's a true story about the problems of two very, very smart people who marry and also collaborate on scientific studies. Marie Curie won two Nobel Prizes and Pierre won one. The movie is based on Eve Curie's excellent book (same title as the movie) about her parents.

Tuesday, October 16

"Pet Tech" (PBS, 9-10 p.m. E/P) This documentary in PBS' Scientific American Magazine series describes the convergence of high technology and the family pet. Uh huh. Now there are high tech games for bored parrots (some breeds have the cognitive abilities of a 4-year-old child) and lonely dogs.

Wednesday, October 17

"Beyond the Moon" (PBS, 9-10 p.m. E/P) This is a documentary about the future of robotic space exploration -- schematics and models of the latest equipment and interviews with the scientists who are developing them.

"Inventions We Love To Hate" (The Learning Channel, 10-11 p.m. E/P) In this documentary about the dark side of human ingenuity scientists and sociologists describe cases where human ingenuity has bestowed on us new products that create more problems than they solve: Artificial foods (be afraid, really afraid, to read the small print on the packaging) unnatural sounds (woofers, leaf blowers, Muzak), parking meters, child-proof caps on arthritis medication (you can never get them to work), fashions (that constrict or cause rashes).

Thursday, October 18

"Girl Meets Race Car" (A&E Network, 10-11 p.m. E/P) A documentary in the "Ultimate Reality" series, this is the true story of Mindy Paulsen whose parents wouldn't let her get behind the wheel of a race car until she was 22 -- even though both were race car drivers. After working in her mother's pit crew for years, she finally gets her chance to race, under the coaching and direction of her mother.
