No, this is not going to be a long boring essay of the moon. Okay . . . maybe a little!
The moon is a "hot spot" here on Whyville! It is occupied daily by various people. People from all over Whyville go there to have fun! But do they really know what they are looking at? Yeah, the moon and the American flag, but do they know the history?
It all started with Apollo 11, the first manned mission to land on the moon. It was the fifth space mission of the Apollo program. It was launched in July 16, 1969 and its companions were Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin Aldrin, Jr (Buzz).
What really pumped up NASA, was President John F. Kennedy's speech: "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth". Of course, NASA was already trying to achieve this, but this gave them an extra boost.
On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon, and he said his historic words "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." He spent his first few minutes collecting data and taking pictures (in case the mission had to be aborted).
And after they took in the beauty and finished their tests, they planted the American Flag! Which now we can float right next to it!
So, next time you go to the moon, make sure you remember the history!
