Happy Halloween, Whyville!!!

In honor of the holiday, I dug up a cool underwater mystery, a show on Edgar Allen Poe himself, and a documentary all about Halloween. If you're not in the mood for spooks and spirits, check out the excellent History of Britain series, or this National Geographic report on anthrax in the wild.

Watch the shows and let me know what you think!

"Mysteries Of The Deep: Search For The Submarine I-52" (National Geographic Channel, 9-10 p.m. E/P) This documentary follows underwater archaeologists in search of a Japanese sub, "I-52", larger than a football field, which sank in the Atlantic in 1944 with 2 tons of gold on board. A version of the sinking incident, written before this modern salvage effort , has been spun into an excellent adventure novel, "Cryptonomicon", by Neal Stephenson. (available in paperback) The novel is about secret code-breaking, so if you really love that science you'll love the book.

Sunday, October 28

"National Geographic Explorer: Afghanistan's Warriors/Wild Anthrax" (MSNBC Channel, 8-9 p.m. ET, 5-6 p.m. PT) This documentary has 2 parts -- a series of interviews with people who have been on both major sides of the internal conflicts in Afghanistan and an ecological report by veterinarians in Africa about outbreaks of anthrax among Namibia's wild animals (elephants, antelopes) but not people.

Monday, October 29

"Praying Mantis" (Discovery Channel, 8-9 p.m. E/P) This documentary in the "Nigel's Wild Wild World" series looks at some of the 2,200 different species of the praying mantis, including ones that can catch birds (especially hummingbirds), poisonous snakes, and lizards.

"History of Britain: The Body Of The Queen" (History Channel, 9-11:30 p.m. E/P) This initial episode in a documentary miniseries about England during a century dominated by the rule of Queens (the 16th), including one of the shrewdest politicians of any gender in any century, Elizabeth I. The series continues Tuesday, Wednesday, concluding Thursday when England, ruled by a rather dim bulb of a King, has a fight with America (see Thursday viewing tip below).

Tuesday, October 30

"Science Times" (National Geographic Channel, 8-9 p.m. E/P) This documentary news-magazine, produced by New York Times Television includes a timely scientific study, just in time for the World Series, explaining the physics of a curve-ball, a knuckleball and a sweet spot . If you're not a baseball fan, there's also a report by a brewer, chef, and DNA expert about the way the legend of King Midas got started. (It had to do with a food-feast, not a gold heist.) Plus there's a report on how U.S. Navy activity may be causing mass strandings of beached whales in the Bahamas

"Great Books: Tales Of Edgar Allen Poe" (The Learning Channel, 10-11 p.m. E/P) This is a Halloween-themed documentary about the life and work of a really great writer. Did you know this guy was a West Point graduate? That means he was a trained engineer -- and it shows in his writing. Anyway, the program will acquaint you with 4 of his classic scary stories -- which you will almost certainly need to know about for some school test someday: 'The Pit And The Pendulum", "The Fall Of The House Of Usher", "Ligeia" and "The Tell Tale Heart".

Wednesday, October 31

"The Haunted History Of Halloween" (History Channel, 8-9 p.m. E/P ) This documentary traces out modern, commercialized, Hollywood-ized annual late-October silliness to ancient European pagan (Celtic) and medaeval Christian (All Hallow's Eve) celebrations. .

Thursday, November 1

"The Wrong Empire" (History Channel, 9-10:30 p.m. E/P) This is the wrap-up episode in the miniseries, "A History Of Britain" which has been running since Monday October 29th. Simon Schama, who wrote the script (you see him in the show) is rather brave. He shows you the way that smart, energetic people (the British, in this case) can get going building a company or an empire (the same thing, in the story he tells about the British in America and in India) and end up doing some really stupid things. Big Time Stupid. . (He's British-born but now lives in New York. I guess they didn't like his 'tude back home. You probably will, though.)
