Well hello Whyville. I am starting a new column called "Writing Ways". Each week I will talk about different issues with grammar. This week I'm talking about subject pronouns.
You and I are pronouns that can be used as the subject of a sentence. They can stand alone. No reference is needed to the noun or phrase these pronouns are replacing.
Example: You and I are learning about bats. Or maybe you could try something like this: We are learning about bats.
He, she, it, we, and they are also subject pronouns that can replace nouns and phrases containing nouns in the subject of a sentence.
Example: Bats are mammals that can fly. They are mammals that can fly.
Here are some more sentences.
Tina and Robert visited Dr. Alex Tran to learn about bats. They visited Dr. Alex Tran to learn about bats.
Dr. Tran explained that hearing is very important to bats. He explained that hearing is very important to bats.
Bats have large ears with ridges and folds of skin. They have large ears with ridges and folds of skin.
A bat makes sounds and listens for their echoes. It makes sounds and listens for their echoes.

Okay, now that you have the idea are you ready to make some of your own sentences? Try making some up and have your friends and family members try to figure out what subject pronoun goes where. Have fun.
