Ah, politics. Those things you may or may not know and love. Well if you love politics, you probably know about the upcoming United States Presidential Election. If not, you will by the time you finish reading this series, or at least a little more on the subject!
( I know that I just recently wrote an article on the lesser-known Democratic Candidates, but of course, people want to know about ALL the candidates! )
First off, let's talk about the United States political parties. There are several political parties, but the two main parties are Democrats and Republicans. There's also the Independents. Some of the other ones are the Green Party (to learn more about this party, go to www.gp.org.), the Libertarian Party (for more information, go to www.lp.org), and a very lesser known one, the Constitution Party ( www.constitutionparty.org ) which I'm not sure is even still active. I just learned about them!
The two main parties are what we'll usually be talking about in this series is the Democrats and the Republicans. These two parties run "primaries" or "caucuses" in all of the United States. They help pick the candidate that will run for the party in the main election. Primaries are public votes that happen in most of the states, and caucuses are more intimate gatherings between officials of the party where not everyone can vote, but a candidate is chosen by discussion (if I'm correct.) Caucuses happen in only a few states, like Iowa and Nebraska.
The candidates running in the Democratic Party are Hilary Clinton, Barack Obama, and a lesser-known candidate I named in my other article, Mike Gravel. Two candidates have dropped out within the past week! These candidates were Dennis Kucinich (also in my other article), and John Edwards.
The candidates running in the Republican Party are Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, John McCain, Ron Paul, and Mitt Romney. Yes, one of the main candidates just dropped out today after a disappointing third place finish in the Florida Republican Primary, Rudy Guiliani.
Tonight, Wednesday January 30th, 2007, is a Republican debate at the Reagan Library.
In the past week, several things have happened, such as:
-- Ted Kennedy threw his support to Barrack Obama
-- As I mentioned, Kucinich, Edwards, and Guiliani have dropped out.
Although not much has happened in the past week, there is always something to poke fun at or pick a side on in the election, even if it hasn't happened in the past week. Whether it be Mitt Romney asking "Who let the dogs out?" while campaigning to a group of children, or Hilary and Obama's constant bickering at debates and the insults that fly when they get more "intense" at debates, there's always some political entertainment!
