Look outside. What do you see? Rolling hills? An abundance of trees? Or do you see building after building, semi trucks crossing the highway, and too many apartments to count? If you answered yes to the third question, you are in trouble. Environmental trouble.
Picture this: Green hills, trees everywhere you look, flowers popping up, butterflies, bunnies, and little cute squirrels hopping along, minding their little own business.
Then, picture that scene, but then, you hear . . . a rumbling noise. It gets louder and louder, until you see what has been making that noise is a bulldozer. In fact, MILLIONS of bulldozers! And they are there for a special purpose . . . to destroy that forest by logging and to destroy the forest to build a stupid city!
Now, I will give you some cases which are happening to my city, and may happen to many cities to come. I hope you will listen to this because these are all (I hope) reasonable causes to support trees.
Case 1: Where I live, (and this place is fairly environmental) there are NO old growth trees because someone decided to cut down EVERY SINGLE tree! Eventually, more trees grew in, but I will never forgive what the loggers did to our city.
Case 2: A couple years ago, I was driving from our annual city-wide yard sale, I saw a HUGE plot of land, with all of the trees cut down and absolutely NOTHING growing there. It looked like a huge war zone! Not cool, in my book. So, I complained to the mayor. The lady took notes and everything, yet they still ignored my complaint. Why? Because I was a "kid".
Case 3: My grandfather used to live in a house by our beach. Just outside of the house was an enormous tree. When he heard that City Hall (no, not the Whyvillian) would tear it down, he knew he needed to do something. Well, what he did was hung a sign on the tree saying: "Please do not cut down this tree. We used to live here and we don't want it torn down". Anyways, people driving by would sign it if they supported this cause, and many people did, yet they cut the tree down.
Case 4: When the neighborhood down the street was in the making, I was quite irritated. Why? Well, I know that you need trees for new housing for families, but when I read the newspaper, I was very shocked. I found out that the people who had cleared the forest had cleared more than their share of land. I wanted them to plant trees, but no. They just built another house! Not fair.
Case 5: Now, this is the one that happened a couple of days ago. We have a ferry terminal with trees all around it. Local arborists came in and decided to give them some 'pruning'. When my family drove by there, I felt SO mad. They had hacked off half of the top of ALL the trees! It looked like they were maimed. Now, some of the bushes will live, but all of the trees will die because they can't get all the nutrients they need.
*Hits gavel on table* Now, who is guilty? The trees for being in the way? Or the loggers, city hall, and arborists who cut down every tree in sight? You decide, but I'm on the side of the trees. I hope this article has informed you about what is happening right before your eyes. Yet, nobody is doing anything about it. I challenge you, readers, to step up to the test and show everyone in the world what they are destroying by building houses and everything.
Now, on the arborists side, I understand that we need wood for paper, houses, etc., but we don't need to over-do it in the process. Below are some ideas to conserve trees.
1. Buy recycled paper instead of regular paper. It will save millions of trees.
2. (For people who are 18+ or who's parents got a job change) If you are consulting moving to another house, try buying one that is smaller in size than one of those HUGE ones. It will save trees.
3. When you are going to a grocery store, choose plastic over paper, bring your own bag, or re-use the paper ones that you use.
4. Recycle, recycle, RECYCLE!
