I glanced over the pages of my book as the sweaty afternoon dawned on the car ride home. Yes, family get away's during Spring Break are so wonderful sitting in your own sweat; really makes a great story to tell to your kids. The particular book that I was reading was "The Perks of Being a Wallflower". Quite honestly, I think it is my most cherished book. This was to be the hundredth time that I have read it; that I have soaked in its literary artwork. Reading books over and over sometimes opens your eyes to new things. I usually create a different look for each character in my mind. That's the great thing about characters in a book versus a movie; in books you can change the looks of everything. But every time you watch a movie it's the same out fits, hairstyle, and places.
This particular time that I was reading a certain paragraph stuck out in my memory. It talks about how the main characters, Sam, Patrick, and Charlie, are on their way to a party. A song comes on the radio and after it was over Charlie utters "I feel infinite." I started thinking about Charlie's one sentence; how important it was despite the fact that it was so small. It really hit a nerve with me. I've read this book so many times, but never have I realized the significance of Charlie's thoughts.
I realized that the things that make you feel infinite are different for everyone. Most of the time it's simple things like the light that come through your window on a Saturday afternoon. How important are these little moments to you? Do you take them for granted? I realized that we are lucky to be here. We are granted a great gift to breathe in air each and every time. People are dying just because of their race, something that has nothing to do with their character or their personality. The most probable outcome of these killings is just more violence and more rebelliousness.
If you died tomorrow, would you be happy with the life you've lived and the things you've done? Have you lived life to the fullest, taking each and everyday and treating it like a gift? I try to be the kindest I can be and being healthy is important to me. I enjoy feeling the morning air against my skin as I run in the wintry air. And I feel infinite. Simple things like hugs from my friends make me feel like I belong to something bigger then just me. We are the human race and no matter what skin tone, how skinny we are, how old we are, what kind of people we hang out with, etc.; it doesn't matter. You should stay as pure and opinionated as possible. Don't become compromised and do something distasteful because someone else does.
What makes you feel infinite? Writing in your journal makes you feel infinite; share it with the world so that they can enjoy it too. Running makes you feel infinite; run with a friend or family member. Going to concerts makes you feel infinite; share the band with your friends and neighbors. The list is endless. Spending time with my friends makes me feel infinite. They are my world and they take the stress of school and just life off my shoulders. I can melt into a fairy tale world without any stresses or worries, when they are around. I love them, truthfully and honestly.
"And in that moment, I swear we were infinite."- The Perks of Being a Wallflower
