As you may know, Earth Day was on April 22nd, 2008. Many people took part in the spirit of the day, and became a little bit more 'Earth-friendly'. Here is a little more information on Earth Day:
- Earth Day was founded by the first organizers of it in the year of 1970.
- Along with Earth Day, the Earth Day Network ( EDN ) was also created to become a driving force, spreading environmental awareness around the world.
So, now that you have a little more feel of what Earth Day is in your noggin, we can get on to other things. The Earth Day Network supports a variety of different things, and on the bright side , none of them are violent. Signing petitions, participating in various events, and just helping your community are a couple of things the Earth Day Network encourages. Speaking of events, in Washington D.C , supporters rocked out to many artists such as Jordin Sparks and enjoyed listening to the wise words of many guest speakers like Ed Norton and Russell Simmons. That was just one of the events though. Cities such as New York, Los Angeles, and even Tokyo held fantastic get-togethers in recognition of our wonderful Earth.
Interesting recycling facts:
1. 350,000 aluminum cans are produced every minute, and aluminum goes into beverage uses more than any other product.
2. Once an aluminum can is recycled, it can be part of a new can within six weeks.
3.We use over 80,000,000,000 aluminum soda cans every year (Wow , we sure do drink a lot of soda!).
4. To produce each week's Sunday newspapers, 500,000 trees must be cut down.
5. If all our newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year!
6. Only 27% of the newspapers produced in America are recycled.
7. Every month, we throw out enough glass bottles and jars to fill up a giant skyscraper.
and two more interesting facts . . .
8. Rainforests are being cut down at the rate of 100 acres per minute!
9. You can walk 1 mile along an average highway in the United States and see about 1,457 pieces of litter.
Maybe I'm starting to bore you all now . . . but maybe not. Even if I am, it doesn't matter because you still must have a look at some awesome pictures from Whyville's own Earth Day celebration!
I guess I wasn't the only one happy about Earth Day on Whyville!
