When I first heard "Bubbly" on the radio, I thought, "Wow." The song was very calming and had great lyrics to it. I wondered who wrote it and who sang it? The answer soon came to me. It was Colbie Caillat, who was first discovered on Myspace as an unsigned artist.
Colbie Caillat (pronounced Coll-bee Cah-lay) was born on May 28, 1985, and grew up in Malibu and Ventura County in California. Her father, Ken Caillat, co-produced Fleetwood Mac's albums Rumours and Tusks.
Colbie was inspired to sing after hearing Lauryn Hill's version of "Killing Me Softly" (a song originated from Roberta Flack). She began to write her own songs when her father told her that songwriters are the ones that receive a lot of respect in the music business. At first, it wasn't easy. Although she did take piano lessons as a kid, she wasn't as motivated to play it. It wasn't until the age of 19 that she finally picked up an acoustic guitar.
When she was 15 years-old, Colbie met Mikal Blue, a producer who had worked with artists like Carrie Underwood and Five For Fighting. He appointed her to sing a few songs that he had written during a fashion show. After that, he helped Colbie write songs for her debut album, Coco. Jason Reeves, a singer/songwriter, also lent a hand.
After all of the songs were finished, Colbie put a few of them on Myspace for the world to hear. She didn't get as much audience as she expected in the first few months. However, after she added "Bubbly", her page was getting thousands of hits per day! Before she knew it, she was the number one unsigned artist on Myspace for four months. With such a huge success, she signed to Universal Records.
It's Colbie's amazing voice and songwriting talent that brought her attention. No wonder people everywhere are listening to her platinum-selling album, Coco.
"The great thing about Myspace is that you can build up an army of fans and then when you go to a record company, there's no point in them trying to change what you do because it's already been tried and tested," Colbie said.
