If we all sat in our chairs when we were in Elementary/Primary school, looking at the neatly-printed worksheets and trying to copy down letters exactly as we see them, shouldn't we all, if you think about it, write the exactly same way -- like the neatly printed handwriting on the sheets that we learned our writing from? Ever wonder why as we get older, our writing style changes? People who study handwriting believe it's because our writing changes to our personality, and because of that, if you study the way a person writes, you can tell a bit about their personality.
Graphology, or handwriting analysis, can be traced as far back as the second century, when the Roman historian Suetonius Tranquillus studied Augustus Caesar's handwriting, and said that because it was not separated sufficiently, Augustus was mean. This study of Caesar's handwriting and then their drawing conclusions of him as a person began the idea that one's handwriting could help determine their personality.
This idea was also practiced by ancient Chinese philosophers. However, nothing official on graphology appeared until the seventeenth century. In Italy, the first known article on graphology appeared under the title "Ideographia". Soon after, a physician in Capri, Camillo Baldo, wrote a book explaining how you could tell a person's nature by studying their handwriting. The idea exploded in countries such as France, Germany, Czechoslovakia, England and America, and was later changed from "Ideographia" to "Graphology". Graphology also caught the eye of some noted people in our history: Edgar Allen Poe, Charles Dickens, and Albert Einstein, to name a few.
Now, you may laugh at the idea of writing saying something about your personality, but actually, some employers look very closely at their applicants' handwriting while considering who they would hire. In Switzerland, eighty percent of large companies use graphology while deciding who they should hire, and it is also used in Forensic Science investigations. Surprisingly, researchers say that graphology is 80-90 percent accurate. So, now that we know a bit about the usefulness of graphology, ready to see what your handwriting says about you? The best and most accurate way to see what your handwriting indicates about your nature is to get a sheet of lined paper that you've written on -- a piece of paper you wrote on at school, probably -- and judge off that.
Slant
-If you write where your handwriting slants to the right, that shows an emotional response to what has been said, but not which emotional response. For example, if someone says something, and you wish to be manipulative in response, you would write with a right slant. The problem is, this applies to many emotions, including wishing to be friendly, supportive, intrusive, loving, responsive, etc.
-If you, for the most part, write straight, this shows that you are an independent person.
-If you write with a left slant, you are more reserved.
Size
Size is defined in two sizes: Large and small.
-If you write in a large size, it can either mean that you are very outgoing, or you put on an act of confidence.
-Small handwriting can mean many things. It can mean the opposite of large: that you are reserved, it can also mean that you are a thinker and academic, and if you write delicately and in a small size, it means that you are not a good communicator.
Pressure
-Extremely heavy pressure shows that you get very uptight. You react first, ask questions later.
-Heavy pressure shows that you are committed and take things seriously.
-If you write lightly, you are sensitive and compassionate.
-Uneven pressure shows lack of energy.
Word Spacing
-Wide spacing in between words shows that you need some space.
-If you write with narrow spacing in between words, it indicates that you wish to be with others, but beware! It might also mean that you are intrusive and crowd people.
Of course, these aren't always accurate, so if you don't like your results, or don't think it describes you at all, don?t worry! Remember, they say it's only 80-90 percent accurate, so you could be that 20-10 percent that it doesn't work for. My opinion on graphology? I think that it's interesting and fun to see what it says about you, but I don't necessarily deem it accurate. Still, it won't hurt when you're applying for a job to write for success!
