I'm sure some of you will be shocked by what I'm about to say. I'm going to go ahead with it anyway, so consider yourself warned. You may want to turn off your computer and walk away now.
I. Am. Not. Good. At. Sports.
There! I said it! Go on, laugh! Point at me in wonder! Treat me like the uncoordinated creature I know I am!
Alright, I think that covers the drama portion of this article. Moving on . . .
Now that you know the sad truth about me, you must be wondering - I'm sure you are, it's the first question anyone asks me - what I do with my tennis racket. I know, it's like I read your mind, isn't it?
T-Mobile
For this one, you can substitute the racket for a frisbee, paper plate, or whatever else works for you. Grab some charms from wherever you can find them, and make sure they're extremely light. If you want, make them yourself on cardboard. Go by a theme, like flowers or cartoon characters, or make it completely random. Attach a piece of string to each charm. Each string should be 1-2 feet long, but make sure to vary the lengths so that the charms aren't bumping into each other. Tie the other end of each string to the racket. Gently tug each string to make sure everything's secure. Paint the border and handle of the racket if you want, or decorate it in some other way. When you feel satisfied, display the mobile where it's sure to catch someone's eye. Or give it to someone and brighten their day!
Racket Man
Find a cardboard box that's small enough so that you can put it on top of the racket without any corners going over the edge. Paint it, add stickers, glitter, and whatever else you'd like. Then fill the box with dried beans or beads about 1/4 of the way. Close the box and give it a little shake, just to see how well the sound comes out. Add or remove beans/beads until you're happy with it. Close and secure the box onto your racket, and you've got your own maraca. Use it to rock out to your favorite songs, or do what I do and use it to annoy people. Er . . . maybe that's not such great advice . . . ignore that last part!
Caught in a Dream
A dream catcher works to protect the person who sleeps under it. The hole in its center lets good dreams enter, and the bad dreams get tangled in its web. To make your own dream catcher, make a hole in the center with wire cutters (you may need an adult to handle this part). Spin colorful yarn around the racket's border, handle, and even within the netting. String some beads onto the yarn, or glue some feathers to it. Then hang it where you know it'll fill its purpose. When you wake up each morning, you'll be greeted by your own creation!
So, while I look at a closet full of sports equipment I'll never use, I can at least be happy that some of it is going to a good cause. At least, until tennis season starts and I have to explain why my racket is covered in feathers.
