Author's Note: I wrote this because I was feeling sad about my childhood slowly slipping away . . .

Childhood is the best time of your life - that's what we're always told.
It's a blessing we're never grateful for, until we become old.
No one ever told us we would waste all those youthful years.
No one ever told us how we would miss those petty fears.
No one bothered to describe to us the way imagination fades.
And to cherish sibling fun, playing with buckets and spades.

The times spent playing pretend in the yard on an imaginary mission.
Those were also our first days at school learning simple addition.
Those first learning stages were easy - homework was never a chore.
We could be ourselves and sing, play, laugh, dance and draw.
There was no shame as a child, oblivious to the eyes that judge.
No shame in licking the cooking bowl, tasting the chocolate fudge.

When we were carefree children we had no bills to pay.
It's only that we're older now; we can see our hair is gray.
My strength is slowly fading and my muscles are growing sore.
I remember those childhood days and wish there had been more.
Childhood is over now, does this mean we can't have fun?
No, that was just another passing phase, a new one has begun.
