Maybe I've just had some bad experiences with pool toys, but nevertheless, I'm skeptical about this "Bessie/George" character.
We are so used to seeing her/him aimlessly floating in our pool that we hardly notice her/his presence. We take for granted the fact that she or he is a vigilant lifesaver just waiting to rescue some poor Whyvillian who slips into the water. But I have a different theory about this Whyville regular we all know and love. I think this creature we affectionately call Bessie/George is actually a direct descendant of the Loch Ness monster, and not a pool toy at all!
OK, I know you're rolling your eyes right about now, but keep reading! I mean,
stranger things have happened, like the aliens who recruit citizens to help them find their lost comrades. Good point, huh? Anyway, as I was saying....
The Loch Ness monster is a prehistoric creature that is rumored to live in a lake in Scotland. Between the years 1933 to 1992, over 3000 sightings were reported, and scientific investigation has been going on to determine if Nessie really exists. (On a side note, Nessie, the monster's name, sounds an awful lot like Bessie.) The public is on to the monster's home, so Bessie/George (who I believe is the daughter and/or son of Nessie) went into hiding. Whyville is one place the scientists would never think to look, because it is a science-related website!
Bessie/George doesn't appear to be dangerous, and not one Whyvillian has ever drowned due to her superior life-guarding skills, so maybe we shouldn't blow her cover. We owe her for making the pool a nice place to hang out. Your secret is safe with us, Bessie/George!
This is Devonny, running off to the pool party to hang out with my favorite sea monster. Plus, where I live it's too cold to go swimming outside in the middle of winter!
