As I was looking through some of the Times archives recently, I noticed some really interesting issues, and to be honest, I think recent Times issues are just DULL compared to the old ones. It's wonderful that new writers are beginning to get articles published, but please, if you plan on writing something, make it ORIGINAL. Sure, I love hearing about recent events and fashion trends, but 4-8 articles a week gets kind of boring.

I'm not trying to shatter any hopeful writers. In fact, I'm trying to encourage you. Here are some suggestions that could make the Times a more INTERESTING issue each week.

What NOT to Write:

Fashion articles! One or two per issue is fine, but let's not start a whole controversy over it.

Articles that are similar to ones from the past. For example, we've had our share of internet dating, dieting, etc. It's not that these aren't interesting, just that we've been there, done that.

See, that was short! Now, you may be thinking that I've sucked all the good ideas out of your mind, but don't worry -- here are some suggestions that everyone will love to read about.

What to Write:

Recent events! Like in LifesGood's article, Calgary or Tampa Bay? By the way, I love those sports articles!

A made-up happening or story behind Whyville. These are always fun. Check out Bigfoot, Mark and Jen Join Whyville by TIKE.

A poem! I know there's a lot already, but if you use an original style, the poems become a lot more noticeable. For example, research or ask a teacher about different types of peoms like haiku and acrostic poems. You could even write a poem and then explain how it's put together.

Articles about a sport or hobby. Write about your favorite sport, instrument or other hobby. AgentChad sets a great example in his article, The Sport of Paintball.

Reviews. Tell about a good (or bad) book, movie or even CD. Explain why Whyvillians should or shouldn't read the book, see the movie, or listen to the CD. An excellent example of a book review is Shelly1's article
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

And of course, Science articles!!! These are so interesting! Try writing about anything you learned in science class, or even share an experiment. Look at my article Let's Play with DNA, for example. You can also check out Jill20's hair experiments to see a good set of experiments that someone came up with on their own!

Thanks for reading my article. I hope the Times is soon filled with more interesting articles!!!!

Editor's Note: Thanks, actingup9! Good articles of all kinds will always be welcomed -- fashion or otherwise! :)

Although many of our veteran readers have indeed had their fill of internet dating, dieting and newbies, they remain very important topics to Whyvillians of all ages. That means we'll continue to publish well-written articles on those issues -- although of course any new perspectives or fresh insights will have a better chance of being published than someone churning out the same old, same old.

Want more pointers? We want more breaking news here in the Times. Also, really dig into your story. Don't just tell us what you think. Show that you've done interviews (don't just say you have), done research (share the books and websites and more with us), and done your reading (if it's already been in the Times, you can quote it or refer to it, too!). All that will improve your writing, thinking and storytelling, if you work on it.

But let me tell you, the number one rule for getting published in the Times is: You MUST check your grammar and spelling. Use that computer check, sure, but also go over it yourself. Don't trust your grammar? Run it by a parent or older sibling. I'm tired of dealing with articles that consist entirely of "chat speak" -- if I have to take an hour to figure out what you're trying to say and type it all up, you've just taken away three or four articles from this week's issue.

Whyville is all about learning and having fun, so teach yourself better English, and help us teach our readers the same! Don't worry, a few typos won't kill you... but i juss cant stand 2 c ne more of dis kinda writting, its gon 2 driv me CR8zEE! :-D
