Rosa Parks... Martin Luther King, Jr... John Brown... Harriet
Tubman....
"Who are these people?" a few of you may ask. These
are just four of the most signifcant people in African-American History. Some
of you may not know who these people are or what they did. Those who do may
not understand why they did it. Well, I'm here to share a brief description
about a couple of these folks.
Rosa Parks
Rosa was a very extraordinary woman. Back when Blacks and Whites were treated
especially unequally in the United States, Blacks had to sit at the back of
the bus or stand up and hold on to the handrails when White people wanted their
seats. One day, Rosa was in the back of the bus when a White man came to her
and told her to get up out of her seat so he could sit down. Rosa didn't budge,
so the man said it again and she refused. Moments later, the bus pulled over,
and Rosa was arrested and put into jail.
Harriet Tubman
Many years before Rosa Parks' struggle for civil rights, Harriet led dozens
of people to freedom through the Underground Railroad before the Civil War.
It wasn't really an "Underground Railroad." It was an escape route
for slaves to use to flee the South and become free in the North. Harriet would
take them up through the route, going from house to barn to cave and on, out
to one of the free states of the Union, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey,
New York, etc.
These people were wonderful and powerful in many ways. The
main reason is that they all had a purpose -- they were all leaders and they
knew that one day all of these issues about race would be settled. Heck, Martin
Luther King, Jr. even had a dream about it!
Now, I challenge you to go and find out more about these people!
Don't do it because I say so -- do it for your sake.
I will leave you with this thought: "Why did they choose
the shortest month of the year to be African-American History Month?" This
question remains unanswered, as far as I know. But don't let that ruin the fun
of learning! ;-D
