January 21, 2005 -- Today, like many others before it,
will go down in history.
On January 20, 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt was sworn
in for his second term on the steps of the Capital in Washington D.C. Then,
24 years later on January 20, 1961 John F. Kennedy was also sworn in on the
steps of the Capital. Today, President George W. Bush stood where so many have
before and gave his inauguration speech.
In his speech, President Bush told the world that, "the
United States would not shrink from new confrontations across the globe, with
the great objective of ending tyranny." Then, at 11:56 a.m., President
Bush placed his left hand on a family Bible and promised the nation and the
world that he would "faithfully execute the Office of President of the
United States" by reciting the famous words that every president since
George Washington has uttered.
For many, the occasion was a happy one, but to others it was
another dark day. As the president's armored limousine drove down Pennsylvania
Avenue behind police motorcycles, hundreds of protesters lined the streets.
Some of them carried coffin-shaped signs to symbolize the 1,360 dead American
soldiers in Iraq. Other signs read, "Worst president ever, impeachbush.org"
and "Guilty of war crimes."
Despite the protesters, President Bush and his wife, Laura
Bush, got out of their limousine and walked the traditional two miles to the
White House. These next four years are guaranteed to be interesting.
