Yet another scam has been going around Whyville ever since the WhyPox broke
out! A few crummy crooks are trying to take advantage of people who want to
look their best in this virtual world of ours. These people go around town,
telling everyone they know the cure for WhyPox, urging people to Y-mail them.
Then these scammers reply to those inquiring Y-mails with a message like:
"Ok, it's really complicated. See, my friend's like this computer genius,
so I asked him for the cure. It turns out there's a way to virtually erase the
coming pimples and boils, and a way to reverse the achoo-ing process. You need
to have a certain software to do this, so it needs to be done on my computer.
If you want, I could get on your account and do it for you.
Some people have y-mailed me back, telling me they 911 reported me. Please,
that is not neccessary. This is not a scam, but if you're uncomfortable with
it, or don't want to trust me, just let me know, and I will leave you alone."
All scammers who think about what they're doing try to appear nice and say
they don't want to push you into it. But Whyville's programmers would NOT make
something that could be reversed by a teenage "computer genius."
We all know to never give out our passwords, yeah, yeah, yeah, and we're sick
of it. But if we're so sick of it, how do scammers continue to convince us to
hand our passwords over?
Maybe some of these wannabe-hackers are just lonely computer geniuses (Editor's
Note: Not geniuses. Hacks, at best.) with nothing
else to do but get virtual money and... take over a virtual world??? Yeesh.
Whatever some scammers are, I'm sure that a few really are child predators,
out to uncover your real life and location. There's no way to know which kind
of crook you're dealing with -- so be careful and (yes, I know you're sick of
hearing it, but...) WHYVILLE CITIZENS, NEVER EVER EVER GIVE OUT YOUR PASSWORD!

Editor's Note: Thanks for the timely and important news report,
liv98! Indeed, no one can just "virtually erase" the WhyPox, or "reverse"
the uncontrollable sneezes, not even City Hall! Don't fall for a scam -- don't
give away clams, parts, passwords or anything else to someone offering to doctor
your account. No cure has been found for the WhyPox, and if ever one is discovered,
you'll hear about it first in the Whyville Times or on the Welcome Page.
