The Chinese Zodiac started in the Buddhist religion. In one story, Buddha is
said to have called all of the animals to his side. Only twelve animals came,
though. Buddha wanted to honor the twelve animals that came for their devotion,
so he gave each animal a year. The animals were the rat, ox, tiger, hare (rabbit),
dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and boar (pig).
Each animal has special characteristics. These are said to affect the events
that happen during the year. Also, some people believe that if a person is born
in a certain year, they will have the characteristics of that animal.
Here are the animals, the years and their characteristics.
