When asked, most people respond to the a/s/l question* saying California, or Canada, or maybe Texas. When I respond, I say Alaska.

Yes, Alaska, the "Last Frontier."

The number one thing people say in response is, "Wow, Alaska! Is it cold?"

Of course it's cold! If it wasn't, there wouldn't be an Iditarod! (And we're off, to a great start...!)

People also say, "Geeze! Is there grass?"

Yeah, there's grass, and plenty of other plants. If not, how could we grow such enormous pumpkins?

Houses. Yes, everyone has to live somewhere. But does everyone live in igloos up here? Nope.

Schools? Do we have schools, you ask? Of course!

One cool thing in the beautiful state that we call Alaska is the Aurora Borealis, or the Northern Lights. This is basically pretty lights and colors that appear in the sky during the middle of the winter. There's a bunch of scientific theories about these, but I won't get into them here.

That reminds me -- in the summer, the sun stays up almost all day long! In the middle of winter, it comes up for about maybe 5 hours. Maybe longer, maybe shorter. It depends on how far north you live... wonder why? Check out the Solstice Safari and the Alien Hunt in Whyville. Both games will help you understand how the sun moves around the Earth, and how the Earth's tilt can change how much sunlight some people get.

Thats about all for now. I'm going to go look at travel brochures! Tootles!
