Many of you read "Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall" back in January. I
have some experience with eating disorders, and I thought I'd share another perspective
on how they affect you.
I am not searching for pity. This article will simply give you another way to
look at anorexia. I am not going to go into bulimia, as I have no experience
there. However, through years of disordered eating myself, and a good friend,
I know all too much about anorexia nervosa.
My Story
I have suffered anorexia twice. The first time I entered the eating disorder
world was right after my parents' divorce, when I was in 5th grade. It may seem
strange to you, but I had no fear of becoming fat. This is more common than
you hear about on TV or in the newspapers.
I felt sick all the time, and therefore didn't eat. Naturally,
I lost a lot of weight. One day, I went into the orthopaedist for a broken arm,
and he took my mom outside, telling her to get me to a specialist immediately.
My weight was below 60 pounds. At 4 foot, 10 inches, that put my BMI (body mass
index) at around 12. Healthy is 18.
