PANDEMIC

Just over a week ago my town had a terrible incident occur at a nearby school. Our oldest and most appreciated staff member was diagnosed with anemia without even knowing it.

He has had diabetes for many years now, and recently found that diabetes can be a major cause of anemia.

Through research I found that people with cancer, diabetes, chronic kidney disease (CKD), heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at greater risk of contracting this illness.

Evidence shows that these lead to anemia because they cause a decrease in red blood cell production. When your body does not have enough red blood cells the body's organs receive less oxygen than needed to function properly, and it forces the heart to work harder, which can lead to other serious problems.

There are many symptoms of anemia. Some include weakness, shortness of breath, dizziness, loss of concentration, pale skin, decreased pinkness of the lips, rapid heart beat, feeling cold, and sadness or depression. If you or someone you know experiences one or more of these symptoms talk to your physician.

Without treatment the disease will worsen, and you could undergo life-treating complications. With the correct medication you could double your red blood cell count, and correct the disease.

Thankfully my teacher is fine and undergoing treatment. We are all giving our hopes and prayers for his quick recovery so that he will return to our school and begin teaching again.
