Hello Whyville! Today I am writing for the Whyville Times to bring you one of today's heroes.
Well she didn't save the world or anything like that, but she taught many people a major concept of life -- to never give up on what you love. Bethany Hamilton also known as Beth Hamilton.
Thirteen year-old Beth Hamilton lost her arm in October (not 2006) in a shark attack. As many of you know, Beth is a surfer. Well after Beth lost her arm and she healed, she went right back to surfing. That's amazing seeing how she had lost her arm. That must have taken a lot because it's a lot harder than it looks to surf.
I am really proud to see a girl like her, and she was only 13 at the time; to not give up on what she loved. We are all gifted at something. But sometimes we give up on it. Hamilton sure wasn't like that. I strongly admire that. She is a good role model for many out there and she surely is my role model.
Well about a week or two before Christmas, I was shopping with my good friends Sadie and Kirstee. We go shopping a lot in the store known to be Claire's. I love to buy accesories. We were looking at the necklaces, bracelets, and other stuff. I came across this shelf with a ton of beach-looking jewelry. They were beautiful! (A person from Ohio doesn't get to see beach jewelry every day.)
I was looking at the jewelry and I wanted to see who made it, or where it was from. I saw white, bold letters labeled BETH HAMILTON on it. My face lit up when I noticed that she had a jewelry line. Well I'm not all quite sure if she has a clothes line either but I got really happy. Beth really keeps working for what she loves. She doesn't give up and she has a lot of potential. It's amazing!
Also, Beth Hamilton was interviewed on Channel 1 News. You might watch Channel 1 News in your "Homeroom" or "Primetime". She was interviewed on "How to make a better you." She was on the beach getting interviewed about excercise. Beth was showing everyone this pacer test she does. It's when you clip this small pacer to your waist right above your front pocket. The pacer is cheap, only about $10.00 USA. Anyways it counts each and every footstep you make in a day. You should take about ten-thousand footsteps a day. They said it was healthy. Well Beth said since excercise isn't always fun, then try different ways with the pacer test.
Beth said:
"It's fun to get out there and get involved. You should try this pacer. It's fun to challenge your friends with it and see how many steps you can do in a day, or even a week. Sometimes it encourages you to push yourself a little more each day!"
Well that inspires many teens across the world to get out and get involved -- as well as never giving up on your dream. I always think about my future every day, so that's a great start! Next time you are feeling down, and thinking, "Gee I'll never be able to do this, I give up." Stop right there! Think about Bethany Hamilton. The girl who lost her arm in the shark attack but never gave up!
I hope this article inspired many readers out there.
