Fractions and Percents

Fractions and Percents are used to talk about a part of a bigger thing.

A fraction can have any number on the bottom, but a percent is a fraction that always has 100 on the bottom.

Fractions Percent Fractions
1 2   1 5   2 5 50 100   20 100   40 100

Since you know the bottom number is always 100, you can leave it out and put a % sign after the top number. The % means "Percent".

1 2 = 50 100 = 50%
1 5 = 20 100 = 20%
2 5 = 40 100 = 40%
100% is One Whole since it just means 100 100 .

Line-up

Here's you and a bunch of other Whyvillians along with their heights. Drag them around until they are in order from shortest to tallest.

Grouping

Now that you've ordered everyone, it is easy to make a graph of their heights. Drag and drop each person into the correct funnel to group everyone by height.

Histogram

Congratulations! The graph you just constructed is called a histogram. Here's the same graph you just made, without the heads on it. You can use this to easily compute your percentile height ranking.
1. Click on the bar where your own head belongs. Remember, you are tall.
2. How many people are tall on the graph ?
3. How many total people are at your height OR shorter on the graph?
4. How many total people are represented on the graph?
5. Here's how to calculate your percentile height in this group:
  • Multiply the number of people who are your height or shorter by 100. Input your answer here:
  • Finally, divide your answer by the total number of people on the graph, and input your answer here:

Explore

Great! We say that your height puts you in the th percentile among the people in this group. Now, let's explore this a bit more. Drag the blue slider along the graph to see how the percentile changes at different positions on the graph.
1. If you drag the slider until the blue area covers up to the bar, how many heads does it cover?
2. Drag the slider until the blue area covers up % of the heads. What height represents the th percentile in this group?
