Whyville is free, but we are quite busy sometimes. In those busy times, we give priority access to those who buy a WhyPass.

You'll first need to print out or hand copy the permission slip. You can find the permission slip by clicking on "Permission Slip" in the bus menu. After you print it out, fill it out, have your parent sign it, then mail or fax it to us. Sorry, we do not accept permission slips by e-mail.

You earn your clams in Whyville by playing the educational games and getting involved in a variety of activities on the site. This article in the Whyville Times will also give you a good head start.

They're everywhere around town! Start exploring by clicking on the different buildings in Whyville, or by going to the different destinations in the bus menu. You'll start finding games hidden all over.
You'll first need some face parts. You can go to Grandma's and get a few donated face parts to begin with. Or, check out the Bargain Basement in Akbar's for inexpensive face parts. Feel free to browse the many stores in Akbar's for good deals on citizen made face parts. Once you have some face parts, go to
"Pick Your Nose" to put them on.

Your satchel is the red backpack on top of the Whyville bus. You can find your ledger, books, trophies, face parts, etc. in there. So whenever you're in doubt of whether or not you have a certain face part, if a purchase at Akbar's was successful, you can go to your satchel to find out these things.

We have spent hundreds of hours on our language filters and commuity safety tools. Over 2,000,000 users have found our website safe enough to visit, but please visit yourself and see if you agree. Remember, part of being safe is also being proactive in protecting yourself. Click on the red telephone above the Whyville bus to learn about the silence, vaporize, and 911 tools. Don't give out your password! Choose an original hard-to-guess password and always log-out when you are finished playing.

Sadly, just as in real life, there are trouble makers that try and steal things from people. What a drag! Don't let them ruin your fun! Scammers will pull every trick in the book. Be on your guard. A good sign of a scam is if anyone asks for your password or offers you theirs. Any time you see someone asking for or giving out passwords, 911 report them immediately!
The general rule of thumb is if a deal sounds too good to be true, it usually is. You should just walk away or politely decline. If they ask for your password, you should file a 911 report on them immediately. Don't fall for scams claiming to raise your salary or double your clams. They just want to steal your clams, or worse, your password. Go to the trading post when you want to make a trade. If the person starts getting pushy about when to press "agree" or starts making up excuses, exit the trade immediately.
If you see someone offering to sell or buy an account, you should 911 report them immediately. Not only is it cheating to buy or sell accounts, you risk the safety of your own account because you are essentially trading passwords. You are responsible for everything that happens under your name. 911 report anyone asking for or giving out passwords.

Tape over someone's mouth means that they said something that was against Whyville's safety and conduct rules and cannot now chat. We hope to use it as an educational aid, giving some force to our boundaries. Tapings vary in length.

No, this is not technically possible. The only thing that gets loaded on your machine is the Java applet, and applets are completely safe.
If your computer doesn't have Java installed and enabled, you won't be able to see chat rooms and some games in Whyville. Only the yellow links appear at the bottom. If you go to the front page of Whyville, you'll probably see a notice in green at the top saying you do not have Java enabled. If you click the link, it will take you to the place where you can download and install Java, and then you'll be set.

You should ask your parents to see if you're behind a network firewall, using a proxy server, or if they're using parental controls that is blocking information from our site. If you're using an AOL browser, you may want to launch Whyville using Internet Explorer or Netscape instead.
If the computer keeps telling you that you are a "Guest," it means that your computer doesn't have cookies enabled. Change your Internet browser security settings so that cookies are enabled. You should ask your parents for permission first before changing any settings on your computer.

There are two ways to get into the Face Factory to make a design. Why-Pass holders get priority access into the Face Factory and can get in pretty much whenever they want. For all other citizens, you'll need to use a Face Factory Voucher [FFV] to gain access. Each FFV allows you to design one part; but you can find FFVs scattered in random places on Whyville. Or, visit the Trading Post and trade for one.

Don't use profanity, make threats, talk about or engage in illegal things. Remember, Whyville is an educational site for children. If you behave as you would with your parents or teachers, you'll be just fine. Remember to never give out your password and personal information that would allow a stranger to contact you outside of Whyville. That includes e-mail addresses, instant messaging screenames, outside web addresses, full names, etc.

City Workers are adults who live around Los Angeles and are paid by the company that makes Whyville. It's a real job for us, just like when your parents go to work. They all have special skills that Whyville needs: programmers, artists, community managers, etc. City Workers always wear a red beanie with yellow "CW" letters printed on it. If someone claims to be a City Worker, and he isn't wearing the beanie, 911 report him immediately.
