Kinematic Attic : Speeding Up & Slowing Down
Disk
To slide a disk and time it, follow these steps:
  1. You can use the disk and stopwatch in only certain rooms in Whyville, not all. Visit any of the following rooms to use these tools:

  2. Say "disk" to summon a disk, a stopwatch and a ruler. You'll see a ruler appear across the bottom of the screen, a purple disk above the ruler, and a stopwatch on the right hand side of the ruler. The ruler measures Whyville's screens in pixels. The stopwatch measures in seconds.

  3. To slide the disk, say
start disk at x pixels per second
So, to start the disk sliding at 80 pixels per second, say
start disk at 80 pixels per second
  4. This command starts the disk sliding across the ground with the initial speed you gave it. The stopwatch will start by itself at the same time.

  5. Your task is to watch the disk and stop the stopwatch as soon as you see it come to a complete stop. If you start the disk with a speed that is too slow, you might find that you can't get to the stopwatch in time. If you start with a speed that is too fast, the disk might slide all the way out of the room without stopping. In any case, simply say disk again to start over.

  6. What's a speed to use that is neither too fast nor too slow? That will depend on where you are. Why? That's for you to find out.

  7. When you've had a successful trial, don't forget to record your data! To record your data, say
record disk stopped at tt seconds
So, you might say something like
record disk stopped at 3.8 seconds
if you timed the disk stopping at 3.8 seconds.

Enjoy!
